Ardbeg’s Wee Beastie: A favourite at whisky tasting events

I had forgotten just how wonderful this offering is.

I was looking for something simple that replicates the best of Scottish single malt whisky, but with an extra punch—and Wee Beastie delivers.

### A recap

Introduced in 2020, Ardbeg Wee Beastie hails from the revered Ardbeg distillery on the island of Islay, Scotland. Known for its intensely peated whiskies, Ardbeg aimed to create something youthful yet powerful with this release. Clocking in at just 5 years old, the age statement is unusual for single malt whiskies of this caliber. Typically, older whiskies are revered for their complexity, but here, Ardbeg flips the narrative. The “wee” in its name suggests a small, untamed beast, and that’s exactly what this whisky embodies—young, vibrant, and unrestrained.

At 47.4% ABV, Wee Beastie is bottled at a higher strength, ensuring its robust character shines through. The whisky is matured in ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, adding layers of complexity despite its young age. With a hefty peat level of 40 ppm (parts per million), it’s unapologetically smoky, the hallmark of a true Islay whisky.

### The Nose

From the moment you nose it, you know you’re in for something special. The sweet citrus notes leap out first, mingling with rich peat and dark summer fruits like blackberries and plums. It’s the perfect invitation to the bold experience that awaits on the palate.

### The Palate

Each time I taste Wee Beastie, I get a different hit. Yes, the unmistakable lemon rind is front and center, but there’s so much more to explore. Tropical notes like pineapple add brightness, while pears bring a smooth, juicy sweetness. It’s a whisky that evolves with every sip, challenging the palate in the best way possible.

### The Finish

If there’s one downside, it’s that the finish is far too quick. But perhaps that’s what makes Wee Beastie so memorable—like the beast it’s named after, it leaves its mark and then vanishes, leaving you wanting more.

Would I buy this again? The answer is a big yes. It is great value and usually receives rave reviews at whisky tasting sessions.
